What is the Myopia? Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment.

What is the Myopia Disease?

Myopia can be divided into three categories:

Refractive myopia: Due to the increased refractive power of the cornea or crystalline lens, light is focused in front of the retina.

Axial myopia: The front and back diameter of the eyeball becomes longer and light is focused in front of the retina.

Pseudomyopia: Short-term myopia caused by excessive contraction of ciliary muscles when looking at close objects for a long time, causing the lens to thicken and the refractive power to increase.

Symptoms of Myopia Disease

Inability to see things clearly at a distance.

Causes of Myopia Disease

The main causes of myopia disease are reading or working at close range for a long time and improper light sources. The axial length of the eye is too long or the curvature of the cornea is too curved. Therefore, the light entering the eye cannot form a focus on the retina and falls in front of the retina.

Treatment for Myopia

Laser myopia reduction surgery can be performed to change the curvature of the cornea and refocus light on the retina. However, please note that this surgery is more effective for patients with 600-degree myopia, and may not completely reduce myopia in patients with deeper myopia.

Prevention

The easiest way to deal with myopia by yourself is to wear glasses with appropriate power. You can also consider wearing contact lenses, but it is not suitable for those with eye allergies or dry eyes.

  • When looking at close objects such as books, the distance should be at least 30 centimeters, which is the distance between your eyes and the desk when you sit upright.
  • If you want to read for a long time, you should take a 5-minute break every 30 minutes or stare into the distance to restore the adjustment ability of your eyes. When reading, choose a place with sufficient light, but be aware that light that is too bright or too dark can easily cause eye fatigue.
  • Don’t make a habit of reading in bed or while riding in a car.
