The cornea is the transparent structure in the front half of the eyeball. When a corneal ulcer occurs, the eye may experience severe pain, but such ulcers are uncommon. With proper treatment, ulcers can heal within three or four days. However, if left untreated or improperly treated, it may affect vision.
Symptoms of corneal ulcer
- Severe pain in the eyes, tears, eyelid spasm, and inability to open the eyes.
- Eye pain can occur suddenly if corneal ulcers occur due to dust entering the eyes, abrasions, or chemical burns.
- Corneal ulcers caused by viral infections gradually worsen and become serious.
What is the main cause of corneal ulcer?
- Virus infection or trauma, such as a scratch on the eye from a small particle of sand.
- Burns from chemicals or eye burns from ultraviolet light.
Will corneal ulcer heal itself?
- If sand gets into your eyes, use cotton or the corner of a clean handkerchief to gently wipe it away. If the sand cannot be removed, do not force it and see a doctor.
- If chemicals splash into your eyes, seek first aid immediately and flush your eyes with tap water. Sometimes it is necessary to open the victim’s eyes with your hands before you can flush them thoroughly.
- If severe eye pain persists, you should see a doctor immediately or go to an emergency room for help.
- The doctor will prescribe eye drops or eye ointment to the patient, and the patient should cover the affected eye with an eye patch for at least 24 hours to allow the ulcer to heal.
Prevention
Wear protective goggles if your eyes are exposed to damage from machinery, chemicals or ultraviolet rays at work or at home.
