Night Blindness

Night blindness is caused by the inability of the eyes to produce rhodopsin. Rhodopsin allows people to see something in the dark, even with weak light.

Symptoms

Being in a dark environment and being unable to see things in weak light.

What is the main cause of night blindness?

  • Vitamin A is necessary to supplement rhodopsin, and patients are mostly caused by severe malnutrition or vitamin A deficiency.
  • Suffering from a rare genetic disease called retinitis pigmentosa, which can begin in early childhood and gradually worsen, leading to blindness ten to fifty years later.

Can night blindness be cured?

The treating doctor will examine the patient’s eyes. If abnormal pigmentation is found on the retina, especially if the patient has a family history of retinitis pigmentosa, he or she will need to see an ophthalmologist. However, ophthalmologists can only provide appropriate assistance to patients who are gradually losing vision, but they cannot cure retinitis pigmentosa.

Prevention

  • There is currently no way to prevent it.
  • Patients should undergo genetic factor testing to avoid affecting the next generation.
  • Eat more foods containing vitamin A, such as milk, fish, vegetables, etc., to prevent vitamin A deficiency. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the human body can turn into vitamin A.
